CO2 Meter, CO2 Traffic Light or CO2 Data Logger: Which Solution Is Right for Your Application?
Indoor CO2 concentration is one of the most practical indicators of air quality, room comfort and ventilation efficiency. In schools, daycare facilities, offices, meeting rooms, waiting areas, public buildings, archives, laboratories and event spaces, carbon dioxide rises quickly whenever many people remain in enclosed rooms for longer periods. This makes CO2 a useful signal for whether stale air is being removed effectively.
In practice, however, very different devices are grouped together under the idea of CO2 monitoring. A CO2 traffic light, a CO2 meter and a CO2 data logger do not serve the same purpose. A simple visual ventilation aid is something very different from a device used to document readings, compare rooms or evaluate the performance of a ventilation system.
When is a CO2 traffic light enough?
A CO2 traffic light is especially useful where many users without technical knowledge should quickly recognize when ventilation is needed. Typical applications include classrooms, training rooms, meeting rooms, waiting zones, club rooms, staff areas and smaller offices. Its main advantage is the intuitive color-based display. Users do not have to interpret an exact ppm value to understand whether action is needed.
This is particularly useful in everyday school environments. The German Environment Agency describes CO2 as a very good indicator of “used” air in classrooms and also points out that proper ventilation is often difficult to achieve consistently in heavily occupied rooms with long usage periods.
When is a CO2 meter the right choice?
A CO2 meter is the right choice when exact readings are required. This applies to offices, administrative buildings, medical practices, laboratories, technical rooms, libraries, event venues and rooms with changing occupancy. In such environments, it is not enough to know whether ventilation is needed. Operators want to understand how heavily rooms are loaded, how quickly values rise and whether certain measures actually improve conditions.
For professional use, the measuring principle matters. Instruments based on NDIR sensor technology are often preferred because they measure CO2 directly. Other important criteria include measuring range, accuracy, response time, calibration options, alarm function and whether the device is intended for stationary, mobile or integrated monitoring use.
When is a CO2 data logger the better solution?
A CO2 data logger goes significantly further than a simple display device. It stores measurements at defined intervals and makes time-based patterns visible. This is especially important in schools, daycare facilities, archives, laboratories, production areas, museums, event rooms, meeting zones and public buildings. Instead of seeing only a single reading, operators gain useful information about peak loads, typical occupancy profiles and the real effectiveness of ventilation concepts.
Standards, rules and technical context
In workplace environments, ASR A3.6 Ventilation is an important point of reference. For planning and evaluating ventilation in non-residential buildings, standards from the DIN EN 16798 series, especially DIN EN 16798-1 and DIN EN 16798-3, are also relevant.
